After you make an important point “pause” and let your audience “reflect” on your statement. When you ask your audience a question pause afterwards and let them think or reflect on it! If you say something “funny” pause afterwards and let your audience “laugh”. You have heard the line, “Don’t step on your joke.” Practice your speech out loud pausing in the right places.
